Volkswagen has joined the electric car party and stolen the show. In November 2014, Volkswagen unveiled its first, all-electric car with zero tailpipe emissions. Their Think Blue® approach to efficiency and sustainability caught the attention of the Environmental Protection Agency. In competition with 12 other Electric Vehicles, the EPA chose the 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf as the most efficient compact car in its class for the 2015 model year. After extensive testing, the EPA determined that the e-Golf functioned at 116 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe), based on combined city and highway driving situations. The EPA calculated that it costs 87¢ to travel 25 miles in an e-Golf, and it could travel an estimated 83 miles on one battery charge. These were some of the reasons why the 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf impressed the EPA, and took top spot among electric vehicles (EV) for sale in the United States.
Motor Trend, one of the world’s premier automotive authorities, recognized the all-electric e-Golf as their 2015 Motor Trend Car of the Year. Motoringview magazine praised the 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf as the ‘Best Fuel Economy Compact Electric Vehicle (EV)’. Car and Driver, Automotive Rhythms, and EV News made similar proclamations in their auto review columns.
For years, Volkswagen has successfully engineered and manufactured quality vehicles to suit the changing needs of everyday life. In response to fluctuating gas prices, the e-Golf dispensed with the gasoline-powered internal combustion engine. Instead, the car was equipped with a 24.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a compact electric motor-generator, both of which produce no emissions.
The 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf is primarily an urban vehicle designed for city driving. There are three ways to charge the lithium-ion battery pack. First, with optional installation of a 240-volt wall box, the e-Golf battery can be charged in less than 4 hours. Alternatively, a charging cable can be plugged into any standard 110/120-volt electrical socket for a charging time of 20 hours. Lastly, the e-Golf comes equipped with a standard Combined Charging System (CCS). The CCS enables the car to use a standard DC fast charging system, available at 18,000 charge point stations around the United States, and builds the battery’s level of charge to 80 percent in 30 minutes. Whichever method is used to re-charge the lithium-ion battery, the cost is lower than fueling a combustible engine.
At first glance, the price tag of $ 35,445 for the 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf might seem daunting. However, the select dealerships, where the car is for sale, will offer many qualifying Government rebates for this ecofriendly vehicle. The e-Golf SEL premium model offers an extensive list of standard equipment. The features include a 7.2kW on-board charger, touchscreen navigation system, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and LED headlights. Also, the e-Golf also has a seating capacity for 5 passengers.
The overall conclusion, from those who participated in a test drive, stated that the 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf was ‘fun to drive, yet practical’ and ‘pleasantly surprised by the smooth ride.’
